Currently on display at Hauser & Wirth in downtown Los Angeles is New York-based Swiss artist Nicolas Party’s Sottobosco. I recently has the pleasure of viewing Party’s installation and I was mesmerized.
According to the gallery’s website, “Sottobosco conjures the shadowy world of the forest floor in a brilliant pastel universe where subject, form, and time collapse in visual splendor.”
I was immediately taken with the architectural quality of the installation. Strategically-placed arches frame and focus your attention to many of the paintings.
Walking through this set of arches brings you to…
…Portrait with Mushrooms which eerily merges fungi on the forest floor with a striking woman with insects in her hair.
These arches frame paintings of ethereal caverns in shades of red and green.
I can almost imagine myself floating on a raft in this haunting cave.
Probably my favorite was this group of yellow busts, each with its own head dress of flora and fauna.
Sottobosco is on display until April 12, 2020 at Hauser & Wirth at 901 East 3rd Street in Los Angeles. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it!
